Early Life and Education

Rishi Sunak was born in 1980 in Southampton to parents of Indian origin. His father was a doctor from Kenya, and his mother a pharmacist from Tanzania. He excelled academically, attending Winchester College before studying Philosophy, Politics, and Economics at Oxford University. There, he became active in the investment club, showing early interest in finance. After Oxford, he joined Goldman Sachs as an analyst, then earned an MBA at Stanford University, where he met his future wife, Akshata Murthy. He also co-founded Theleme Partners, a hedge fund, with French financier Patrick Degorce.

Political Ascent

Sunak entered politics in 2015, winning the safe Conservative seat of Richmond in Yorkshire. He quickly rose through the ranks, serving as a junior minister under Theresa May and then as Chief Secretary to the Treasury under Boris Johnson. In 2020, he was appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer after the resignation of Sajid Javid. As Chancellor, he launched the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme, widely praised for protecting millions of jobs.

Brexit and Economic Policy

A committed Brexiteer, Sunak argued that leaving the EU would allow Britain to be more agile and innovative. He supports the Global Britain vision and has sought to strengthen ties with India and the Commonwealth. However, his economic policies have been tested by inflation, energy crises, and strikes. He advocates fiscal orthodoxy but has also shown pragmatism, such as his early support for large-scale borrowing during the pandemic.

Becoming Prime Minister

Sunak lost the Conservative leadership contest to Liz Truss in September 2022, but after Truss's disastrous mini-budget and subsequent resignation, he won the second contest unopposed. He became the UK's first non-white Prime Minister and the youngest in over 200 years. He inherited an economy in recession, a divided party, and public services under severe strain.

Key Policies and Challenges

Sunak has set out five priorities: halving inflation, growing the economy, reducing debt, cutting waiting lists, and stopping small boats crossing the English Channel. He has strengthened ties with France and Europe on migration but taken a tough line on China. Domestically, he faces opposition from union strikes and a cost-of-living crisis. His wealth and family connections have attracted scrutiny, including criticism over his wife's tax status. Despite early setbacks, he has shown resilience and a willingness to adjust course. His survival as PM will depend on economic recovery and uniting his party.

Sunak remains a reserved figure, but his backers note his sharp intellect and calm temperament. Former Foreign Secretary William Hague praised him as having "what it takes" to succeed. Critics, including Labour leader Keir Starmer, argue he is out of touch with ordinary workers. The next general election, expected in 2024, will be the ultimate test of his leadership. Whether he can steer Britain through turbulent times and win a mandate remains an open question.
